The design is based on the fairy books by Cicely Mary Barker, with their beautiful water coloured picture plates.
The quilt is of whole cloth construction in as much as the design was transferred on to the hand dyed backing fabric, then each piece was cut out, and using bonda web, ironed on to the backing cloth and machined in place. The fairies are machined with a small zig zag stitch, but the flowers are freely machined with extra detail added with further machining which is reminiscent of water colours. The majority of the fabrics are hand dyed using the hot water dyes, plus the transfer dyes on the synthetic fabrics, to give subtlety of shades, plus matt and shiny, which again is reminiscent of water colours.
